After several years of development, the Lost in Space TV reboot is finally happening, with the streaming service Netflix picking up the series earlier this year. The show is currently set for a 2018 premiere date, and today we have word that the series will flip the script with an iconic role. Netflix has brought on Parker Posey for the role of Dr. Smith, which has been played by a man in the first two iterations of this story.

Jonathan Harris portrayed Dr. Smith on the original TV series, with Gary Oldman portraying the character in the 1998 movie adaptation. Deadline broke the casting news, but the site didn't offer any specific details about this character. Parker Posey joins an ensemble cast for this Netflix reboot that already includes Toby Stephens as John Robinson, Maxwell Jenkins as the youngest Robinson child Will, Taylor Russell as the oldest daughter Judy Robinson and Molly Parker as the family matriarch, Maureen Robinson.

Netflix, the world's leading Internet TV network, issued a 10-episode series order for the first season of the one-hour sci-fi drama, from Legendary TV, based on the beloved 1960's sci-fi classic from Irwin Allen. The show is reimagined by feature writing team of Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, whose writing credits include Dracula Untold and The Last Witch Hunter. They also wrote the epic action adventure Gods of Egypt which hit theaters this year, and the upcoming Power Rangers, which hits theaters on March 24, 2017. Zack Estrin (Prison Break) is serving as the showrunner. The series will premiere worldwide on Netflix in 2018. Legendary TV also recently picked up the rights to Dune for a film and TV series, but it remains to be seen if they will partner with Netflix for this property, like they did with Lost in Space.

Taking its cues from the original series, the show centers around the Robinson family, who is forced to come together in a time of crisis. Stranded light years from their intended destination, they find themselves battling a strange new alien environment and also their own personal demons. Equal parts family drama and sci-fi adventure, it is a survival story for the ages.

Zack Estrin serves as executive producer alongside Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless who wrote pilot script. Synthesis Entertainment's Kevin Burns (The Curse of Oak Island, Ancient Aliens) and Jon Jashni (Godzilla, Pacific Rim) also serve as executive prodcuers, along with Applebox's Emmy-nominated director Neil Marshall (Game of Thrones, The Descent) and Marc Helwig. Marshall is also set to direct several episodes of the series. Lost in Space is a Legendary TV production for Netflix.

Netflix has yet to cast the Robinson family's youngest daughter Penny, played by Lacey Chabert in the 1998 movie and by Angela Cartwright in the original series, and Major Don West, who was played by Matthew Perry in the movie and Mark Goddard in the TV series. The streaming service hasn't announced when production will begin on Lost in Space at this time. Parker Posey can currently be seen in the Netflix original movie Mascots, from director Christopher Guest, and she also recently starred in Woody Allen's latest film, Cafe Society.
