I said it once and I will say it again, one can always use more Aaron Spelling programming in their DVD libraries.
Why didn't they get the cast or creators involved in the creation of this DVD set?The Love Boat: Season One, Vol. 2 continues to cruise with the final 12 episodes of this landmark show's first season. Now before you scoff and say, "How in the world was The Love Boat Let me simply say that this show, which centered around the lives and loves of people on a cruise ship, ran for 10 years. No that is not a misprint. With Captain Stubing (Gavin MacLeod) at the helm, and his faithful shipmates Doc (Bernie Kopell), Gopher (Fred Grandy), Isaac the Bartender (Ted Lange), and Julie the Cruise Director (Lauren Tewes), this show was always engaging even though its humor really wasn't.
Filled with guest stars like Kathy Bates, Desi Arnaz, Jr., Vicki Lawrence, and Pat Morita ! The Love Boat: Season One, Vol. 2 is the kind of TV on DVD release that makes us happy we were alive when this show originally aired. While not for everyone this show is worth owning if you're a fan of classic TV.
The New Love Boat
This is a movie of the week that features the likes of Phil Silvers, Stella Stevens, and Gary Frank. Apparently, this was the original pilot for the show and that is why there are certain cast discrepancies. Basically, this is just a longer form version of the actual show. If I was a bigger fan I would probably love this, but as it is it just plays as another episode.
Full Screen Format. These shows looked darker than I thought they would. I didn't notice any dust on the images, I just thought that things would look brighter. Also, the usual Paramount disclaimer "Some episodes may be edited from their original network versions" didn't do anything to help the cause. Things don't look bad here but they don't look amazing either.
Dolby Digital. English, Spanish: Mono. Subtitles: English, Spanish. The audio on this release was solid, however I found that things got a little too distorted when the classic Love Boat theme song played. As I originally said, I personally never followed The Love Boat when it was in its regular run. It was one of those shows that even as a little kid I enjoyed but I never watched it on a regular basis. Before I put these Season 2 discs into my DVD player, I wasn't sure how I would feel about this show in this new 4 disc set. Would I still feel that it was fresh and fun? Would seeing the old characters on screen make me smile like it did before? Would I still be taken by all the gorgeous women galavanting on the screen?
The answer is still yes and no.
The freshness and beautiful ladies are still there in The Love Boat: Season One, Vol. 2. What is lacking is the writing. Or, more to the point, maybe television is so sophisticated today that I couldn't help but notice how pedestrian much of the humor is. However, don't let that deter you from yet another nice cruise down memory lane.
