Maybe it's no Walk Proud starring Robby Benson as Emilio, a young high schooler torn between love and his gang affiliation, but it's close. Lowriders treads on the same thematic landscape, promising to update the atmosphere seen in that 1979 classic. Where Robby Benson had Sarah Holcomb as his love interest, Lowriders has finally settled on Supergirl star Melissa Benoist as it's female lead.

Coming from Universal Pictures, Lowriders will delve into the car culture of East Los Angeles, exploring a world filled with dangerous gangs and street tagging. Ricardo de Montreuil, perhaps best known for The Raven, will direct, with Justin Tipping writing the script. The main cast is rounded out by Demián Bichir, Eva Longoria, Tony Revolori, Gabriel Chavarria, Theo Rossi and Yvette Monreal.

Melissa Benoist will play Lorelai, a part previously attached to both Lily Collins and Nicola Peltz. The story follows the plight of a high schooler caught between his strict father and estranged gang affiliated brother. Both father and son are set to compete against each other in the annual lowrider 'Supershow'. Imagine's Brian Grazer will produce alongside Blumhouse Productions' Jason Blum. World renown graffiti artist Mister Cartoon and Estevan Oriol are executive producing to add some street authenticity to the project.
