There are currently not many signs that Lucasfilm is in a hurry to put of any more Star Wars movies. Following the sequel trilogy that ended with The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, the only movie on the horizon is the Patty Jenkins directed Rogue Squadron film which is currently down to arrive in 2023 but has recently had its own set of problems that could yet see it delayed or scrapped entirely. However, a new report has suggested that behind the scenes there could be a lot going on at Lucasfilm, and not just in relation to the chunky Disney+ slate that is currently in development.

It seems that there are plans being discussed to bring a brand new trilogy of films to the Star Wars universe, one set after events of The Rise of Skywalker that would bring in a new Jedi Order to the fore. Obviously Disney is not about to let the Star Wars universe sit and stagnate in a corner, or allow it to become a Disney+ exclusive project. Star Wars is one of the biggest movie franchises in the world, and for that reason there are always going to be new films coming at some time in the future. Although it was widely said that Disney did not want to go down the route of more Skywalker movies, that could be about to change.

According to former Vanity Fair reporter Joanna Robinson speaking on The Ringer-verse podcast, she has heard “whispers” about a new trilogy being in active development, although she also warned that “you can fill an entire stadium with ideas Lucasfilm has been interested in but never realized.” While there are always exceptions, there are plenty of Star Wars fans who will testify to the number of potential projects that have been left by the wayside, and there is every chance that this could be another of those projects.

The most recent Star Wars trilogy was a mixed bag for many fans of the franchise. The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker all failed to please everyone for too many reasons to list, and although they brought in a large chunk of cash at the box office, once they were done, it seemed that the story of the Skywalker saga was finally at an end. Probably for the best considering nothing since Return of the Jedi seemed to be able to really live up to the original trilogy.

Since then, with the arrival of Disney+, the franchise has been building on the mythology of the Star Wars world by filling in the gaps between the main movies, pulling in characters and plot points drawn direct from the likes of Revenge of the Sith and Return of the Jedi to create The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

However, as Boba Fett’s series proved, there are times that drawing from established characters can not only slip deep into the realms of fan service, but can also undo some of the previously set-in-stone laws of the Star Wars world. With more series like Andor and Ahsoka coming soon, perhaps it is time for Lucasffilm to start looking beyond the familiar and that could be where a post Rise of Skywalker trilogy could come in.
