We now know when we'll see Idris Elba back as Luther in the upcoming Luther movie coming to Netflix. On Friday, the streamer announced that the series will start streaming in March 2023, though the exact day of the month has yet to be revealed. Also unleashed were a pair of first look photos of Elba back in the role. With images coming out and a release window on the board, let's hope that a teaser or some sneak peek footage aren't too far behind.Luther, the movie, is directed by Jamie Payne and written by Neil Cross. Elba and Cross produced the feature film with Peter Chernin, David Ready, and Jenno Topping. Executive producers include Kris Thykier, Priscilla Paris, Brendan Ferguson, Miki Emmrich, and Dan Finlay. Along with Elba, Luther stars Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis, and Dermot Crowley.The Luther series follows Elba as Detective Chief Inspector John Luther, a London officer who's willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. In the movie, Luther will be facing two adversaries; a detective (Erivo) feuding with the titular officer along with a separate criminal threat (Serkis). Idris Elba Has Campaigned for Years for the Luther Movie

"I don't think we're going to do too many TV versions of it; I think the next step is to make a film," Elba said told Radio Times in 2019, suggesting the movie would connect to the fifth season that premiered that year. "This season has the film very much in its sights. We've got a skeleton of an idea for a film. And I'm not allowed to say too much but I can say that this season has the film very much in its sights. If there is a film, then it will be somehow connected to this season."

In 2021, he confirmed that the film was moving forward by saying in a separate interview, "I'm going to be making Luther: The Movie. I'm super excited and I hope the fans are sort of excited for that. It's been a long time coming for a movie, so I'm excited about that."

Officially, Luther started filming in November of last year. At that time, Elba expressed his excitement over finally getting started on the project with a post on Twitter revealing that filming had started.

The Luther movie will arrive on Netflix in March 2023.
