Always planned as a trilogy, the Machete sequel Machete Kills bombed at the box office earning just $8 million in wide release, leaving the franchise's fate in question. But according to Danny Trejo there's no doubt that Machete Kills Again... in Space! will eventually happen. In fact, he claims it is set to shoot later this year.

Danny Trejo was hanging out at the Mad Monster convention in Charlotte, NC this past weekend, where Halloween Daily News caught up with the cult icon and El Sereno legend. According to Danny Trejo, who can next be seen in the sequel Bad Asses on the Bayou, he has already started working on this second sequel to the 2010 hit with Robert Rodriguez. He says:

"Robert and I are going to start to do Machete Kills In Space, so that's going to be awesome. Absolutely. We're going to be working on it this year."

Machete started as a faux trailer for Grindhouse, after the character was first introduced in the Spy Kids series. While the first film was a hit, pulling in a respectable $26 million from a $10.5 million budget, it seemed audiences didn't want another movie when Machete Kills hit theaters. It has slowly, but surely, found an audience on VOD and home video, which is where Machete Kills Again... in Space! may wind up, forgoing a theatrical release.

That has not been confirmed by 20th Century Fox, who released the first two movies. But it seems unlikely that if a third movie is to happen, that they would pour money into distributing it. A trailer for Machete Kills Again... in Space! was released with Machete Kills in theaters, and, as the title suggests, imagines a Moonraker-type mission for the ex-Federale. You can check it out here, then let us know, should this really, truly become a reality? Or should Danny Trejo quit while he's ahead? Hey, he always has the Bad Ass series to fall back on during hard times. We've included the latest trailer for that here as well. Check it out:
