Director Robert Rodriguez has declared that he has “gotta make” the long-sought after Machete sequel, Machete Kills Again... In Space. Speaking with Deadline, Rodriquez knows he has to make Machete Kills Again... In Space in order to satisfy fans of the Grindhouse franchise after teasing the project at the beginning and end of prior outing Machete Kills.

“I put a fake trailer for that on Machete 2 to kind of satisfy (fans). ‘Okay, this is pretty much what it would look like, but you can see it in two minutes rather than two hours.’ And it never satisfies them, so we have to do it. But you know, the original was just a fake trailer on Grindhouse. … (Fans) would bug us for years, ‘When’s that movie coming out?’ I said, ‘It was a fake trailer.’ ‘No, but it looked real! When is it coming out?’ So we gotta make it for them.”

Released back in 2010, the first Machete follows Danny Trejo as a legendary ex-army veteran, who sets off on a rampage against his former boss who tried to have him killed after sending him on a mission to assassinate a Texas Senator. The sequel, released in 2013, picks up with Trejo's character as he is recruited by the U.S. President to stop an arms dealer and a revolutionary.

Machete Kills Again... In Space is teased during the events of Machete Kills and is labeled as a "Coming Attraction.” A label that Rodriguez knows he will have to deliver on.

“It wasn’t meant to be a film, the audience just wanted it. So we have to give it to them. When someone wants something that bad, we never had that with any movie before. Now everyone’s still ‘Machete in Space!’ You can’t give ’em enough.“

Both Machete movies were directed by Robert Rodriguez, and no doubt audiences would love to see Trejo return to the franchise, machete in hand, and donning a spacesuit.

Machete star Danny Trejo is equally eager to get Machete Kills Again... In Space made, with the actor saying back in 2021 that he would write the script himself should Rodriguez not speed things up. "Machete, Machete Kills, if Robert would ever get off his ass, he'd write Machete Kills in Space! I might write it (laughs)," Trejo said.

This is not the first time that Trejo has stated how determined he is to take Machete into the cosmos and would even sit in the director’s chair if required. "I would direct that, Machete Kills in Space," he said. "If I could do a movie, I would direct Machete. I mean, it would just be so much fun I would add a director, but I'd be in it, you know what I mean? I've just got some great ideas for it," he added. "I'm putting it together. I'm writing the script."

For now, Robert Rodriguez is busy working on the sci-fi thriller, Hypnotic, which follows Ben Affleck as a detective who becomes entangled in a mystery involving his missing daughter and a secret government program.
