The anticipation for Mad Max: Fury Road keeps growing and growing, following the third trailer that debuted this week, making it easily one of this summer's most awaited movies. Warner Bros. has yet to announce plans for any sequels, but, during an interview with Esquire, star Tom Hardy, who steps into the iconic Max Rockatansky role originally played by Mel Gibson, revealed that he is actually locked in for three sequels. However, whether or not those move forward all depends on how Mad Max: Fury Road fares at the box office next month.
"I've never been more excited and out of my comfort zone. Everything's based on figures and how things are perceived. Inevitably it's a business."
The actor added that he has seen the final cut, calling it "f---ing unbelievable," while adding details about the bizarre production process.
"We were in the middle of nowhere, so far away from the studio system that [Warner Bros] can't really see what's going on, and just getting things to and from the set was a nightmare. We'd lose half a vehicle in sand and have to dig it out. It was just this unit in the middle of x-million square-kilometres of desert, and then this group of lunatics in leathers, like a really weird S&M party, or a Hell's Angels convention. It was like Cirque du Soleil meets f---ing Slipknot."
As for the sequels, it isn't known if writer-director George Miller has actually written scripts for more Mad Max movies, but at least we know that Warner Bros. is planning on turning this into a new franchise, if Mad Max: Fury Road pulls in big numbers at the box office. Of course, we don't know yet if other stars such as Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult have similar deals in place, but we'll have to wait and see.
