Warner Bros. has released the official plot synopsis for Furiosa, revealing new details about the hotly anticipated Mad Max: Fury Road prequel. George Miller is directing Furiosa, with Anya Taylor-Joy starring as a younger version of the titular character, played by Charlize Theron in 2015’s Fury Road. While Theron or Tom Hardy aren't involved with Furiosa, a few characters from Fury Road, including Immortan Joe and Bullet Farmer, will appear in the film. The synopsis reveals that Furiosa is trapped in a war between Immortan Joe and a new villain warlord, Dementus, reportedly played by Chris Hemsworth.

"As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home."

Furiosa is currently filming in Miller and Hemsworth’s home country, Australia, and is said to be the biggest shoot in the country’s history. Furiosa reunites most of the Oscar-winning creative team behind 2015 hit Mad Max: Fury Road, though it’s unfortunate that Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron aren’t returning, and neither is the franchise’s main character, Max Rockatansky. Director George Miller also penned the screenplay for Furiosa with Fury Road co-writer Nico Lathouris and will serve as a producer as well.

Although Furiosa is now several weeks into filming, we have yet to receive any major casting announcements. So far, only Anya Taylor-Joy (The Northman, The Queen’s Gambit), Chris Hemsworth (Thor: Love and Thunder, Extraction), and Tom Burke (Mank, The Musketeers) are the new cast members confirmed to for Furiosa. Fury Road actors Nathan Jones and Angus Sampson will also appear in Furiosa, reprising their roles as Rictus Erectus and the Organic Mechanic.

The character details are also being kept under wraps, but Hemsworth is reportedly playing a villain, Dr. Dementus, described as a "breathtakingly handsome" man scarred by a deep facial wound. This continues the beloved Thor star’s streak of villainous roles after doing so in Bad Times at the El Royale and Netflix’s Spiderhead.

George Miller envisioned Mad Max: Fury Road as a "one long chase sequence" decades ago, and that's exactly what viewers got when the film debuted in 2015. But where Fury Road takes place in a span of a few days, Furiosa will be an epic story spread over several years. Speaking to Deadline a few weeks ago, Miller revealed that Furiosa's filming was going as planned, unlike the troublesome production of Fury Road, and that he was excited to return to the dystopian world of Mad Max.

"I’ll tell you how it’s going when it’s finished, but it has got off to a lovely start. All I can say about my excitement about doing it is that it’s definitely exciting, because even though it’s certainly of that world of Fury Road, it’s also got a lot of the differences we’ve been talking about. Again, it’s uniquely familiar. And probably the biggest difference is the timespan. Fury Road happened over three days and two nights and this one happens over 15 years. So, it’s a saga."

Furiosa is set to be released on May 24, 2024.
