Madeleine Arthur is an actress you might recognize from her work with Netflix. Recently, she played Mae Dodd in Devil in Ohio, currently the number one show on the streaming service. She played Chris Donati in the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy and will appear as Hannah in the upcoming comedy series Blockbuster. Arthur’s also been having a really good year so far.

“I think I’ve gotten to film some really cool things, and I was able to travel! I spent two months overseas – I was in France and London. I have so much family in London, and I love it. I just think it’s a fantastic city. It’s just the energy! My travels consisted of me eating all sorts of good food, seeing some sights, brushing up on my French, and having some long overdue catch-ups with family and friends. Overall, it was really special,” said Arthur.

Before focusing on acting, Arthur was a competitive gymnast. While she doesn’t necessarily miss the training aspect due to how intense it could sometimes be, she does miss the ability to do certain skills and strengths. She would love to get back to some gymnastics, but something like silks or acrobatics instead of vault bars, beam, floor, etc. In the meantime, she has plenty of other things to fill her free time.

“I love the outdoors, so I would go for either a walk or a hike. I love to cook. I love art and art history. So, something involving any of those things! But also, I love watching movies, reading, and just always love trying something new. Actually, I don’t really like to sit still at home for very long, so I try to just explore and try new things. I’m always up for an adventure.”

When asked by Schön! about who, out of all the roles she’s played so far, has been her favorite character to play and why. Arthur said she couldn’t choose. She loves them all because she feels like they’re all special experiences. Arthur loves getting to dabble in different worlds and being able to go through different types of stories. They all hold a special place in her heart for different reasons.

Mae from Devil in Ohio is a cult survivor, a totally different background from the person playing her. Arthur said that playing her was a challenge, but playing such a dynamic and complex character was something that she loved. However, since everything about Mae was different, Arthur did a lot of research to prepare.

“I watched movies that were related to cults, read articles, and just did anything I could to take pieces from other things to make sure I was portraying her as a full human. She’s escaping trauma – she’s been through a really traumatic experience. Overall, living in that dark space of emotions over a prolonged time was definitely a unique experience.”

Chris is the best friend of Lara Jean (Lana Condor), who, unlike her friend, is very carefree and wild. Arthur said that Chris is a good reminder to be yourself, be who you are, and walk confidently through life. According to her, Chris is very different from who she is in real life, but they are similar in how they both go for it.

“In terms of what is my favorite thing about Chris? I loved getting to deliver her witty lines, and I loved her sense of humor. I also loved getting to work with the whole cast – Lana specifically – and just everyone because when you do three movies together, you become a little family. I miss that we’re not doing it anymore!”

Arthur described Hannah from Blockbuster as being full of joy, fun-loving, optimistic, and loving her Blockbuster family. According to Arthur, there were so many comedic geniuses on that set, so learning from them and playing around with hilarious lines was great. Plus, getting to walk down the aisles of Blockbuster was like going down memory lane because Arthur grew up going to Blockbuster multiple times a week, so getting Blockbuster multiple times a week.

“I feel like it influenced my love of cinema and filmmaking and helped inspire me to become an actor by going and renting movies there every week. So getting to work with everyone was honestly just like pure and utter joy – so many laughs on set. I also just loved learning from all these amazing actors who have done so many excellent comedies already.
