That's a wrap! James Wan has wrapped filming his new horror movie Malignant. Wan has spent the past few years directing massive blockbusters, such as Aquaman and Furious 7. But now, the man behind The Conjuring universe is taking a trip back to his original horror roots with his latest creation. While much remains mysterious about this particular project, Wan has shared some final set photos following the production wrapping over the weekend.

Taking to Instagram, James Wan revealed a handful of photos from behind-the-scenes, with various cast and crew members holding the clapboard. Unfortunately, they don't reveal much in terms of what to expect from the movie itself, as Wan seems to be playing this one particularly close to the chest. Wan provided the following caption with the photos.

"So we wrapped principal photography on Malignant over the weekend. Big thank you to an amazing cast and crew!! You all worked hard and delivered something special! Can't wait to get into post."

Plot details for the movie are still being kept under wraps at this time. What we know for sure is that this is an original idea that isn't connected to a pre-existing franchise. Some speculated early on that this could be connected, in some way, to The Conjuring movies, or maybe even a secret project related to something like A Nightmare on Elm Street. James Wan was quick to shoot that down, assuring that this is an original idea. Wan is producing the movie with Michael Clear, Richard Brener, Eric McLeod, Ingrid Bisu, Judson Scott and Peter Luo.

The cast includes Annabelle Wallis (The Loudest Voice, Annabelle), Maddie Hasson (Impulse, I Saw the Light), George Young (A Bread Factory, Parts 1 & 2, Containment), Michole Briana White (Lila and Eve, She Hate Me), Jake Abel (Another Life, Dirty John), Jacqueline McKenzie (Pine Gap, Romper Stomper: Next Gen). In addition to her duties as producer, Ingrid Bisu (The Nun, Toni Erdmann) also stars and helped cook up the story with James Wan. Akela Cooper (M3GAN, The Nun 2) and JT Petty (The Burrowers, My Only Sunshine) penned the screenplay.

James Wan broke into Hollywood in a big way as the director of Saw, which went on to become a massive hit. He then directed several other original horror flicks including Dead Silence, Insidious and, most importantly, The Conjuring. Wan has since produced all of the spin-offs in The Conjuring universe and, as a franchise, those movies have brought in $1.9 billion at the global box office. Wan has once again partnered with Warner Bros./New Line Cinema for this project, as they've had a very successful creative relationship over the years. Malignant release date is August 14, 2020. We'll be sure to keep you posted as any further details on the project are made available. Be sure to check out the wrap photos from James Wan's Instagram for yourself.
