Back in March, we reported that /mallrats-2-movie-sequel-kevin-smith/director Kevin Smith's sequel Mallrats 2 is actually happening. Over the past month, the filmmaker has been announcing confirmed cast members who will return from the original. While he was planning to shoot the sequel in early 2016, the filmmaker revealed earlier this month that it will be his next movie, and will begin production at the end of this year. While Kevin Smith nearly has his entire cast back in place, there is still one Mallrats actor who has not been announced, and that is Ben Affleck. The director recently explained that he is actually waiting to confirm every single returning cast member before he even approaches Ben Affleck about reprising his role as Shannon, adding that his chances of coming back may be slim.
"I have not reached out to him yet. I am waiting until we have everybody. There's two more people I want to collect, and that way I have everybody, and I can be like, 'Come, on dude, even Gil Hicks is back.' Now, chances are kind of slim, because he's Batman now."
Gil Hicks, portrayed by Brian O'Halloran in the original, was the latest cast member Kevin Smith has confirmed, stating that he has "15 down, 3 to go." While it isn't' known who the other two actors are, one is most likely Claire Forlani, who played Brandi Svenning, while the other could be Priscilla Barnes as the topless psychic Ivannah. The confirmed cast members include Kevin Smith (Silent Bob), Jason Mewes (Jay), Jason Lee (Brodie), Stan Lee (Himself), Michael Rooker (Mr. Svenning), Shannen Doherty (Rene), Jeremy London (T.S.), Renée Humphrey (Trish), Joey Lauren Adams (Gwen), Sven-Ole Thorsen (LaFours), Ethan Suplee (William), Bryan Johnson (Steve Dave), Walter Flanagan (The Fanboy), Brian O'Halloran (Gil Hicks) and Scott Mosier (Roddy).
Kevin Smith also added that he hasn't seen Ben Affleck in over two years, due to the actor/filmmaker's increasingly busy schedule, and if he did sign on, they would only need him for a very short amount of time. However, if he isn't able to sign on, they can still make the movie without him, with a majority of the production taking place in Philadelphia, along with two days of mall shooting in Los Angeles.
"The good news is that we can do it without him if we have to. The even better news is the piece he would play is not like I would need him for a week, he's in and out. It would be quick. The storyline allows for a cast of hundreds, including anybody I've ever met in genre. We'll see whether twenty years of history means anything or it's like, 'Sorry, I've got Gotham City to protect now.'"
