At one point, not too long ago, director Kevin Smith had announced his "retirement," with plans to distribute other independent films not of his making. It didn't take long for the filmmaker to whip up a new slate of movies for himself to direct, though, with last year's Tusk marking the start of his Canadian-set saga known as the True North Trilogy, which will be followed by Yoga Hosers later this year and capped off by Moose Jaws in 2016. The filmmaker took to his Twitter page today to break down his upcoming production schedule, revealing that his long-awaited sequel Clerks III will start shooting this May, followed by Hit Somebody in September and Moose Jaws in February 2016. After that, the director teased, "I smell a rat," hinting that a sequel to his sophomore comedy Mallrats could be next.

Since this year marks the 20th anniversary of Mallrats, the timing would be right to tease an impending official announcement of the sequel. Released almost exactly one year after his breakout debut Clerks, Mallrats was a box office failure, but gained a sizeable cult following after its release on DVD. The comedy marked the feature film debut of then-professional-skateboarder Jason Lee as Brody, a perpetual slacker who goes on a quest at his favorite mall with his best friend T.S. (Jeremy London) (Shannen Doherty) as they both try to reclaim the women they love. Ben Affleck, Claire Forlani, Joey Lauren Adams, Renée Humphrey, Jason Mewes and Ethan Suplee co-starred in the comedy, with comic book legend Stan Lee making an appearance as himself.

Of course, it isn't known if Kevin Smith even has a script written for Mallrats 2, but it should be noted that Jason Lee's Brody also made an appearance in Kevin Smith's 2001 comedy Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, where he owned his own comic book store.
