Amsterdam is quickly becoming one of the year's most anticipated movies, with a big reason being the star-studded cast. The film features Margot Robbie, Christian Bale, John David Washington, Alessandro Nivola, and Robert De Niro. In addition, Chris Rock, Michael Shannon, Mike Myers, Taylor Swift, Zoe Saldana, Rami Malek, and Anya Taylor-Joy will all make appearances. Amsterdam is helmed by David O. Russell, whose previous work includes Silver Linings Playbook, Three Kings, American Hustle, and The Fighter.
According to Margot Robbie, all did not go according to plan during the final day of shooting Amsterdam. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the 32-year-old actress says police showed up on set while filming, forcing the crew to stop production. She says, "[David] doesn't want to stop and he could go on forever, and so could Christian Bale. They're both so dedicated to this film and their craft that David never called cut on this film. So, technically we didn't ever really stop." She continues, "It was the last day of shooting and Christian was saying his dialogue and David's there and he's directing... but the permit was up. We were in Pasadena and the time was up and we were meant to clear out. But we wouldn't. The producers are freaking out and David's still going, Christian's still acting."
Eventually, police were forced to shut down the production of Amsterdam on the final day. "I could see this policewoman being like, 'What is the word people use in the film business to make everything stop?' She was like, 'Enough! Stop!' and then she was like, 'Wrap! Everyone's wrapped,'" Robbie says. "Everyone heard the word 'wrap' and put down the equipment and started packing up. And I was like, 'Wow, a policewoman from Pasadena just wrapped this film.'" Luckily, filming was technically complete for Amsterdam, meaning the version audiences see in theaters is just as David O. Russell intended.
Amsterdam Heads to Theaters Next Month
Amsterdam has everything required to be a great film: An accomplished, veteran director, a cast filled to the brim with talent, and a script penned by David O. Russell himself. The film is set in the 1930s, following three friends who witness a murder only to become the prime suspects themselves. In the process, the trio uncovers one of the most outrageous plots in American history.
Christian Bale, Matthew Budman, and David O. Russell serve as producers for the film, while Drake acts as an executive producer. Amsterdam is set to arrive in theaters early next month, on Oct. 7. Margot Robbie's full interview with Jimmy Fallon can be found below.
