Principal photography recently wrapped on Ridley Scott's The Martian, with the director currently in post-production, working towards a November 25 release. Aside from the script page that was literally sent into outer space back in December, we haven't heard or seen anything about this sci-fi thriller. The story centers on an American astronaut named Mark Watney (Matt Damon) who is stranded on Mars, left behind by his crew after they thought he died in a dust storm. Yesterday, author Andy Weir, who wrote the book of the same name that this adaptation is based on, sent out a photo on his Facebook page, which gives us our first look at Matt Damon on the set.
As it turns out, it seems we have a Super Bowl bet between Matt Damon and his assistant Colin to thank for this photo. Boston native Matt Damon made a bet with Colin, a die-hard Seattle Seahawks fan, and since the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl, Colin now has to wear a Patriots jersey for a year. This photo shows Matt Damon in costume, complete with a Mark Watney name patch on his shirt, alongside Colin, making good on his bet by wearing a Patriots shirt. We can also see a Mars rover vehicle in the background of this shot. You may recall that Captain America: The Winter Soldier star Chris Evans and Guardians of the Galaxy's Chris Pratt had a similar Super Bowl bet, which resulted in both actors showing up as their respective characters to children's hospitals in both Boston and Seattle.
With principal photography now wrapped, hopefully we'll get a more official look at Matt Damon's Mark Watney in the very near future, but we'll have to wait and see. The Martian also stars Kate Mara, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Sebastian Stan, Sean Bean, Michael Peña, Mackenzie Davis, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Jeff Daniels.
