Martin McDonagh is a British-Irish playwright, screenwriter, and director. McDonagh began his career in playwriting in 2003 with the play Pillowman. He went on to write several plays and wound up being nominated for four Tony Awards and five Laurence Olivier Awards, of which he won three. McDonagh broke out into directing in 2008 with his first feature-length film In Bruges before branching out and directing numerous dark comedies, several of which featured actors Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson.

When Marty's friends Hans (Christopher Walken) and Billy (Sam Rockwell) kidnap the dog of brutal gangster Charlie (Woody Harrelson), Marty goes along for the ride in order to use these odd events for his screenplay. Seven Psychopaths was highly praised by critics at the time of its release, with special praise for the direction, performances from the cast, and the witty script. The film earned McDonagh several nominations for Best Director and earned him the People Choice Award at Midnight Madness at TIFF.

Starring Farrell and Gleeson as hit men Ray and Ken, In Bruges revolves around these men after a heated job who retreat to Belgium to lie low. While the two hope to simply bide their time in the city of Bruges, they discover far more than they could have ever bargained for. The film was subject to praise for performances from the cast and particular attention was paid to McDonagh's direction on the film. Farrell took home the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy for his performance. McDonagh earned a few nominations for his direction and his screenplay, winning the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay.
