Variety is reporting that Martin Scorsese is going to shoot his next film The Invention of Hugo Cabret in 3D.

Sony is distributing the film and plans to release it December 9, 2011.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret is based on Brian Selznick's best-selling children's book. It is set in 1930s Paris and follows a 12-year-old orphan named Hugo. He lives in a train station and must complete what his late father started by figuring out the mystery of a broken robot.

The film will start shooting in London in June. It marks Scorsese's first venture into children's literature as well as his debut with 3D film.

John Logan (The Aviator) has adapted the screenplay.
