Marvel always seem to have an endgame in sight when it comes to the sprawling story arcs that make up the MCU, and that was never more true than in Avengers: Endgame, when the Russo brothers brought to screens the epic conclusion to the Infinity Saga with a film that left grown men sobbing in darkened cinemas after a thrilling three hour ride. At the time, it was uncertain where the MCU could go next after such a bittersweet finale, yet now, two years down the line, there is no doubt that the MCU has much more to give and fans want to know when the Russo’s will be getting back in on the act.

As well as directing Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the Russo brothers also worked with Marvel on Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. While they have now been a couple of years removed from the world of Marvel, rumors circulation that an adaptation of Secret Wars could be the next big Endgame style milestone for the MCU, the question is would the Russo’s return to be part of it.

Speaking to ComicBook.com’s Phase Zero at the premiere of Spider-Man: No Way Home this week, Joe Russo was asked what chance there is of seeing the brothers helming another movie in the Marvel franchise, and specifically Secret Wars. He replied:

"You know one of these days, we'll have to see how this all shakes out. I don't know what they're going to do with all these characters! ... Uh, you know we love those guys [Marvel] and I can't say one way or another. But I'd work with them in a heartbeat, best working experience of ours careers, they'll like family to us, and you know we love this material and we love the fans."

Back in the summer, it was reported that Marvel were already discussing future plans with the Russo’s, but the Scarlett Johansson lawsuit over Black Widow’s Disney+ release saw any advancement being put on hold. While that dispute is not over, with both parties seeming to come out of the fray unscathed, Joe Russo being at the premiere of the latest Marvel offering suggests that he is still keeping a toe in the water for a reason, and while he did not confirm that he and his brother Anthony would be tackling another Marvel movie soon, he did not outright deny it either.

With the Russo’s clearly wanted back in the directors chairs for another Marvel movie, and some pretty solid evidence suggesting that the current Multiverse storyline is going to come to a head in Secret Wars, it is not too much of a stretch to expect to see the two coming together a few years down the line when Marvel’s next big cinematic event takes place. Whether we will see them before then, who knows, as with over 30 Marvel projects currently in production that only take us up to around 2024/2025, there are going to be plenty more for the Russo’s to potentially dip into in the second half of the decade.
