Marvel Zombies will hold nothing back when the series arrives on Disney+, officially obtaining a TV-MA rating, according to a post from DiscussingFilm on Twitter. This comes a day after announcing the R-rated films Deadpool 1 & 2, along with Logan, would be added to the streaming service. So it seems like Disney and Marvel are finally branching out with the tone of their projects, even through the animation medium.
Marvel Zombies was announced late last year, following the success of the zombie episode included in their initial animated series, What If...?. Marvel immediately saw its fans asking for the inclusion of more brain-eaters, and that's precisely what we will get with the show dedicated entirely to the concept. We saw plenty of live-action cast members return to their roles for the What...If? series, however, we don't know who will make their way to Marvel Zombies. The series synopsis reads:
Re-imagines the marvel universe as a new generation of heroes battle against an ever-spreading zombie scourge.
Bryan Andrews directs the show and has credits for various jobs across animated films and live-action movies, including The Avengers, Doctor Strange, and Avengers: Endgame. Zeb Wells is set to write the screenplay. Also, during San Diego Comic-Con, Disney and Marvel Studios confirmed the upcoming Marvel Zombies series will arrive on their Disney+ streaming platform sometime in 2024.
Old and New Characters Will Appear in Marvel Zombies
Marvel shared a ton of information at San Diego Comic-Con, including the list of heroes appearing in Marvel Zombies. The list includes zombie versions of Ghost, Abomination, Captain Marvel, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Okoye, and Captain America. In addition, new heroes in the series include Jimmy Woo, Kate Bishop, Yelena, Shang Chi, and Ms. Marvel. We get out first look at the heroes in the animated series below.
The hero's character design certainly looks different, with Jimmy Woo in full costume and Shang Chi donning a cape. We also got a look at Eternals character, Ikaris, in half-zombie form, seen below from CultureCrave.
Richard Madden played Ikaris in Eternals, and Marvel Zombies will mark the first time a character from the film has appeared in a separate MCU project. Look out for a trailer and promotional material to arrive in the next year as Marvel Zombies gears up for its 2024 release date.
