Superhero fans came out in droves last night for the midnight premiere of Marvel's The Avengers, which took in a massive $18.7 million. While it isn't the highest midnight gross of all time (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 took in a whopping $43.5 million last summer), it ranks as the eighth best midnight tally of all time.

The midnight gross is also the best ever for a superhero movie, surpassing The Dark Knight's $18.5 million gross in 2008. It also grossed more than the combined midnight receipts for Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger. Added into that total is $1.3 million from IMAX screenings in 273 theaters.
