Heat Vision reports that Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton are going to star in Universal's new remake of The Thing.

In 1982 John Carpenter made a version of The Thing starring Kurt Russell. The film was a contemporary remake of 1951's The Thing From Another World. That version was directed by Howard Hawks. All the films are derived from a 1938 short story, "Who Goes There?" that was published by Astounding Magazine.

Matthijs Van Heijningen is going to direct this movie from a screenplay by Ronald D. Moore and Eric Heisserer.

Winstead will be playing a Ph.D. candidate who comes aboard a Norwegian research team in Antarctica after it discovers an alien ship in the ice. A trapped organism gets freed and engages in a series of attacks. Winstead is forced to team with a mercenary helicopter pilot (Edgerton) to contain the rampage.

The movie will start shooting March 15 in Toronto.
