Masters of Air, the sequel to the critically-acclaimed World War II drama Band of Brothers, is now set to begin filming in London in March 2021. The first three episodes are due to be helmed by No Time to Die and True Detective director Cary Joji Fukunaga, with the series once again being developed by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg.

Consisting of ten episodes, Masters of Air will stream exclusively on Apple TV+. No expense will be spared, with the series reportedly costing well over $200 million to produce. The series is being written by John Orloff, who also wrote Band of Brothers. Orloff will also serve as co-executive producer alongside Hanks and Spielberg.

Masters of Air will be based on the Donald L. Miller book Masters of the Air: America's Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany, and tell the story of the Eighth Air Force of the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. Much like Band of Brothers, Masters of Air will tell a deeply personal story as it follows the American and British 'bomber boys' who successfully took to the skies and brought the war to Hitler's doorstep.

When announcing the show's development last year, Apple said: "Apple today announced that it has partnered with Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television, and Tom Hanks & Gary Goetzman's Playtone on Masters of the Air, a new international limited drama series that marks the first series greenlit with Apple serving as the studio. Masters of the Air will stream exclusively on Apple TV+, a new home for the world's most creative storytellers, and is the second project for Apple to hail from Spielberg's Amblin Television in addition to Amazing Stories. The series will join Apple's growing offering of sweeping international drama series, including Pachinko and Shantaram."

Released in 2001 to huge critical acclaim, the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers remains one of the greatest depictions of the struggles and horror of World War II, and has since become a benchmark for the genre. Telling the story of Easy Company, the 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division from 1942 to the end of World War II. The series includes dramatizations of the American airborne landings in Normandy, Operation Market Garden, the Siege of Bastogne, with each episode featuring archive footage and interviews with the men on which the stories are based.

At the time, Band of Brothers went on to win many accolades, including the Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries. The series went on to win a total of seven Emmys from its 20 nominations, as well as several Golden Globes. Masters of Air is not the first Band of Brothers follow-up, with The Pacific having been released back in 2010. The series is a companion piece to Band of Brothers and focuses on the United States Marine Corps's actions within the wider Pacific War. The series also went on to win a plethora of awards, including the Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries once again. So, Masters of Air has a lot to live to up to, but if anyone can do it, it's Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg.

Masters of Air does not currently have a release date. This comes to us from Deadline.
