The first poster for Sony's Masters of the Universe is here. It takes the classic logo from the original cartoon written in all silver while promising a March 2021 release date and declaring, "The Power Returns." Obviously, this isn't the first time we've seen a release date for the project, which has been in development hell for a number of years now. With that being said, it has been announced that Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I've Loved Before) will take on the role of Prince Adam / He-Man.
Art Marcum and Matt Holloway are writing the latest draft of the Masters of the Universe script while Aaron and Adam Nee are still on board to direct as of this writing. However, a lot can change in the nearly two years we have to wait for the movie to hit theaters. David S. Goyer was attached to the project for a while and we were even treated to brief concept art teases when it was still aiming for a December 2019 release.
While the Power is returning, it is unclear when production is expected to begin on the Masters of the Universe movie at this time. With a March 2021 release date set, casting and the finishing touches on the script should be occurring right now with an aim to roll cameras either late this year or early next year. Fans have been waiting so long to see the movie, it's going to be hard to believe it's really happening until production officially begins and we end up seeing some set pictures.
Taking the expansive world of He-Man and bringing it to the big screen is not going to be an easy task. The first big screen adaptation came out in 1987 and is known for being quite bad, though there are still some fans who love it. That incarnation is also tainted by the multiple child abuse allegations aimed at director Gary Goddard, who was directly accused of molestation by Top Gun and ER star Anthony Edwards. David S. Goyer was reportedly working on a version of He-Man that would have been as epic as The Lord of the Rings. It is unclear if the production will still try and elevate the franchise in that way.
Masters of the Universe will reportedly hit theaters on March 5th, 2021. Fans have been burned before, so it will be a minor miracle if the production is really able to get off of the ground this time. Sony seems excited to finally deliver a proper big screen adaptation of the He-Man franchise, but we're just going to have to continue to be patient to see what the vibe is and what direction the studio decides to take the source material. The 1987 version was criticized for straying too far away from the cartoon. With that being said, the show was still on the air at the time of the movie's release.
