The Masters of the Universe franchise is based on Mattel’s toy line of the same name and features a number of iconic characters, including Skeletor, Evil-Lyn, Teela, and the birth of He-Man’s twin sister She-Ra. Comparable to that of the modern Monster High franchise, Masters of the Universe began as a collection of toys and turned into a whole media franchise, starting as cartoons in the 80s before becoming a hit movie series. Indeed, on top of the action figures came a series of comics, video games, books, films, and a number of animated television series.

The collection of action figures and settings saw such popularity that it spawned a series of TV shows. The original series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe has been rebooted a total of three times, each of which not having as much success as the original. The most recent reboot is a Netflix CG-animated series of the same name, which is heading into its second season later this year. Of course, the success of the original show led to a number of spin-off shows, including two shows revolving around She-Ra and her own group of heroes. Here's every Masters of the Universe TV series, ranked.

The New Adventure of He-Man was released at the same time as Mattel’s release of the He-Man toy line, an updated version of the Masters of the Universe toyline in 1990. This series follows a new version of He-Man as he is called to fight mutants on planet Primus. This series was meant to be a continuation of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, but the studio had been shut down and was retroactively continued through Masters of the Universe: Revelation. This show was the final installation in the original Masters of the Universe franchise before the series would be rebooted in 2002.

4 She-Ra: Princess of Power

After the success of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, She-Ra: Princess of Power was created by both the toy company and the animation studio with an aim at young girls. She-Ra: Princess of Power follows the title character/twin sister of He-Man who leads a band of fighters against Hordak and his Evil Horde. She-Ra also wields her Sword of Protection and transforms into her alter ego Princess Adora. This show ran for two seasons and has received a number of films, spin-offs, and reboots, including the Netflix original She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. In 2021, Amazon announced that a live-action She-Ra series is in the works, with no connection to the animated show.

3 She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

The Netflix original series She-Ra and the Princesses of Power tells the story of Adora, our teenage heroine who has the ability to transform into She-Ra. Leading a group of magical princesses against the evil Lord Hordak. The show's main focus is the telling of Princess Adora’s origins and eventually reveals her true identity as the twin sister of Prince Adam AKA He-Man. The show was subject to critical acclaim and was nominated for a number of awards, including a Daytime Emmy Award. The show ran for a total of five seasons and was praised for its diverse cast, especially in the exploration of queer characters, working outside the gender binary.

A continuation of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Masters of the Universe: Revelation follows He-Man in the war for Eternia and what would seem to be the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor. The show taps into many of the unresolved plots from the original series, offering resolutions for them and bringing closure to the audience. Developed by filmmaker Kevin Smith, Masters of the Universe: Revelation was subject to a great deal of praise for managing to maintain the same characters and actions that we all know and love while adding fresh content. Some have considered this one of the greatest reboots of all time as it resurrects nostalgic characters and manages to modernize them in a way that makes the show approachable for both long-time Masters of the Universe fans and new potential fans. While there has been no confirmation of a third season, if the show does get renewed, fans can expect to see the next season as early as the end of 2022.

1 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe

While there have been many iterations of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, the original series, which ran from 1983 to 1985, is by far the best. With his Sword of Power, uttering the iconic line “By the power of Grayskull”, Prince Adam becomes He-Man, Eternia’s greatest champion. He-Man uses his powers to keep Eternia safe from Skeletor and his evil forces. This show may have only had a two-season run, but it lies near and dear in many adults’ hearts. Thanks to its classic animation style and the voice-acting talents of John Erwin and Alan Oppenheimer, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was the most successful Filmation animated series ever created and even made IGN’s list of Top 100 Greatest Animated Shows of All Time.
