We may be meeting many more of the supervillains in Batman's Rogues Gallery in a planned spinoff series to The Batman. As of now, the anticipated film is now playing in theaters everywhere. It's gotten off to a pretty great start with high ticket sales in addition to strong reviews, scoring a near-perfect rating with its debut on Rotten Tomatoes.

While we are still awaiting news of a sequel to The Batman, spinoff shows are already in the works at HBO Max. One spinoff will be centered on the police officers working with the Gotham P.D., while another will delve into Colin Farrell's Penguin and his rise to the top of the criminal underworld in Gotham City. There's apparently a third series in early development at the streamer as well.

In a recent interview with the Toronto Sun, The Batman director touched on the planned spinoff. He mentioned Farrell's Penguin series, which has been previously reported on. The filmmaker also revealed that another spinoff is in the works at HBO Max which will focus on Arkham Asylum, a maximum security prison where Gotham's most dangerous criminals are kept under lock and key. As Reeves explains:

“We’re doing this Penguin series and one of the great things about that is Colin Farrell — he’s like you’ve never seen him. He’s so incredible and he’s a scene-stealer. Along the way, we thought maybe we could do (his character) as a series. So I talked to HBO Max and showed them Colin in the movie and spoke to them about what this could be and they said, ‘Let’s do it.’ So we’re doing that and we’re doing another series that connects to Arkham (Asylum). We are talking and thinking about the next movie, but to be honest with you, at the moment, I really want the audience to connect with this. And I really believe they will because I think Rob is an incredible Batman.”

The iconic location was popularized by the video game Arkham Asylum, which has Batman restoring order to the facility after the Joker breaks free from his restraints with many other supervillains running free on the grounds. It was followed up with the hit sequels Arkham City and Arkham Knight. Many fans have long wanted to see more of Arkham in a live-action setting explored on-screen in a Batman movie or series.

Matt Reeves says that everyone involved is waiting to see the reception to The Batman before moving forward with another movie. We can presume that it will most likely happen with the reviews doing well and ticket sales climbing high. But as of now, Warner Bros. has yet to announce that The Batman 2 is officially a go.

The Batman is directed by Matt Reeves and co-written by Reeves and Peter Craig. The film stars Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, John Turturro, Andy Serkis, and Jeffrey Wright. It is set in a standalone universe about two years from the time Batman first started fighting crime dressed like a giant bat.

The Batman is now playing in movie theaters everywhere.
