For better or for worse, Matthew McConaughey won't be running for governor of Texas after all. Recently, McConaughey had been seemingly flirting with the idea by mentioning in various interviews that he was thinking about running for office. He hadn't yet announced an official campaign, though some fans were still wondering what's been happening with this bid and if the True Detective star was still planning on giving it a shot.

In a new video posted to social media, McConaughey has announced that he's not going to be running for office at this time. In the footage, which spans about three minutes, The actor explains that he still plans on helping the people in Texas in other ways beyond pursuing public office, because after great consideration, politics just isn't in the cards for him at this point in his life. As he puts it in the video, McConaughey's goal is to be the most "useful" person he can be.

"I've been considering a run for the governor of Texas. I've been listening, I've been learning, I've been measuring, and studying Texas politics and American politics. What have I learned? A lot. That we have some problems we need to fix... I've learned that freedom comes with responsibility and great leaders serve... As a simple kid born in the little town of Uvalde, Texas, it never occurred to me that I would one day be considered for political leadership. It’s a humbling and inspiring path to ponder. It is also a path that I’m choosing not to take at this moment."

Matthew McConaughey simply feels that he would be more helpful to others by staying out of politics and spending his time pursuing other endeavors. He noted that he would “continue to work and invest the bounty I have by supporting entrepreneurs, businesses and foundations that I’ve believe are leaders, establishments that I believe are creating pathways for people to succeed in life, organizations that have a mission to serve and build trust while also generating prosperity. That’s the American dream."

Before backing out of this possible governor bid, McConaughey suggested he'd be running on a "centrist" platform, ideally serving to help bring opposing political parties together. He hadn't officially picked which party he'd be running for if he were to follow through with it, as he was still measuring the pros and cons of each of the parties. Even with this ambiguity over exactly how he'd be conducting his campaign, McConaughey was still topping polls that showed he just might win the election. Ultimately, it's just not what he's looking to do with his time.

With no immediate plans to get into the political landscape, perhaps Matthew McConaughey can put a bit more focus back into acting. His voice will be heard soon in the upcoming animated sequel, Sing 2, which just dropped its final trailer ahead of its premiere. You can check that movie out on Dec. 22, 2021. It's not clear what will come next for McConaughey after Sing 2, but just don't count on seeing his name on any voting ballots.
