Just one day after adding Rosa Salazar to the cast, Mud star Jacob Lofland has signed on for an integral role in The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials.

The sequel picks up after Thomas (Dylan O'Brien) and his friends have escaped The Glade, but now must survive in a world riddled with destruction and disease. Jacob Lofland will play Aris Jones, an important figure in author James Dashner's novel, who encounters Thomas and the Gladers, as they discover his connection to the maze. Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Kaya Scodelario are reprising their roles from The Maze Runner, with Aidan Gillen signing on last week to portray the villainous Janson, a.k.a. the Rat-Man.

Wes Ball is directing from an adapted screenplay by T.S. Nowlin, with pre-production already under way on the sequel. It isn't known when principal photography will begin at this time.

Jacob Lofland is best known for playing Neckbone in last year's critically-acclaimed indie Mud, alongside Matthew McConaughey and Tye Sheridan. He also stars in Little Accidents alongside Elizabeth Banks, which debuted at Sundance this year, and he had a recurring arc on Season 5 of the FX drama series Justified.
