Ever since Marvel has taken the entertainment world by storm, audiences have been able to see a large range of storylines, visuals, and genres that intersect throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As this franchise continues to expand into the multiverse, Marvel has been extending their each beyond the typical action sequences and grandiose battles that are all over the superhero genre. Well, especially recently, audiences have been more aware of the MCU's integration of horror into their projects.

The horror genre of film is vast. Elements of this beloved genre can be felt throughout the film industry and Marvel has been able to pick and choose where it can live in its universe. After the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, people have been able to pinpoint Marvel's execution of horror elements in their projects. From moments like Scarlett Witch's murder spree to Willem Dafoe's performance as Norman Osborne, here are 12 times that the MCU dipped their feet in horror.

12 Scarlet Witch Crawl

The horror genre can come in many shapes and sizes. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is one project from the MCU that has really taken to some traditional horror visuals. In fact, some fans out there have been giving this film the title of being the MCU's first actual horror movie. In the film, the Scarlet Witch is trapped in the mirror dimension by Doctor Strange in an attempt to contain her destructive rampage. Well, with a character as strong as Wanda, she breaks out. The visual of Wanda eerily crawling out of the mirror dimension is a scene straight out of a horror film. Her body's structure has to be snapped back into place, and we have to struggle to keep our eyes open.

11 The Death of the Illuminati

MultiverseOfMadness
Marvel Studios

Continuing on the trend of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Wanda had more moments that sent chills down our spines. The Doctor Strange sequel had both Strange and Wanda traveling into different multiverses and, at some point, they end up face-to-face with the Illuminati. The seemingly "all-powerful" group takes on an angry and ruthless Wanda and ends up paying the ultimate price. The Scarlet Witch manages to dismantle each one of them and murders Mr. Fantastic, Black Bolt, Karl Mordo, Professor X, Captain Carter, and Captain Marvel in one go.

10 Wanda's Brainwashing Party

Wanda as an antagonist
Marvel Studios

Wanda is easily one of the most powerful characters in the MCU. Her debut was labeled instantly as a force to be reckoned with in the franchise of heroes. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Wanda is a secret weapon against the Avengers. She uses her psychic abilities to place horrific visions of their worst nightmares in the minds of the world's mightiest heroes. If we are going to discuss horror movie territory in the MCU, this scene has nightmare fuel written all over it.

9 Dinner at Wanda's

Wandavision Black and White
Disney Platform Distribution

WandaVision has been one of the most unique and successful projects ever released by Marvel. In a post-Endgame era for the iconic franchise, WandaVision has clearly been a standout show. Audiences are immersed into Wanda's vision of the life she always wanted, one that she decided to take for herself. However, even in her simulation, not everything can be perfect. Wanda and Vision host a dinner when we get to see Wanda's world "glitch." There is an ominous shift in the show's tone that had not been explored before and viewers are left with an ominous pit in their stomachs about what could possibly be happening. It's unexpected, eerie, and horror-fueled. Moments just like this one are littered throughout the show.

8 Doctor Strange Zombie

Multiverse of Madness
Walt Disney Pictures

As we highlighted before, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness could potentially be Marvel's first horror(ish) movie. Well, the Scarlet Witch might not be the only thing to fear. With Strange traveling across the Multiverse to defeat Wanda and protect the young America Chavez, all hell is bound to break loose. Strange is forced to resurrect the body of a multiverse version of himself, and we see a zombie-Strange grace our screens. As comical as it may sound, the scene is dark and gruesome.

7 Iron Man Zombie

IronManZombie (1)
Marvel Studios

Speaking of zombies, Doctor Strange is not the only one that gets a moment as one of the undead. In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter is going face-to-face with Mysterio. Mysterio is projecting vision after vision trying to break Peter down and one of the fears he uses is Peter's guilt surrounding the death of his mentor, Tony Stark. In the vision, Peter is in front of Tony's grave when a decaying, zombified Iron Man began to crawl out of the ground and chase Peter.

6 Werewolf By Night

Marvel Studios

Classic creature flicks are a horror staple in the film and TV industries. Well, of course, Marvel had to dip their feet into this as well. Werewolf By Night is a TV movie that is unlike anything Marvel has ever produced before. The entirety of the project has a vintage old-school feel to it. It's black and white, full of creepy visuals and a riveting plot that is meant to have you at the edge of your seat. If classic horror is your thing, and you are looking for something new, make sure to check out Werewolf By Night if you haven't already.

5 Gorr the Child Terrorizer

Gorr
Marvel Studios

Gorr is the main villain in Thor: Love and Thunder. Played by the iconic Christian Bale, Gorr the God Butcher is visually one of the scariest villains in the MCU. Gorr does a lot to make the audience fear him. From his dark powers to his relentless pursuit to murder Thor and every God he chases, Gorr is a formidable villain. However, it is the way he kidnaps and terrorizes the children of Asgard that had our minds more into the horror genre.

4 The Green Goblin of Our Nightmares

Willem Dafoe in Spider-Man: No Way Home
    Sony Pictures Releasing

If we are going to discuss horror, the entirety of Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin's existence is one of the scariest to witness as an audience. Dafoe is the perfect person to play Green Goblin in both Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and when he brought the character back in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Norman Osborne/Green Goblin is a very complicated villain in the Spider-Man franchise. The multiple personalities make him unpredictable and a constant threat. From him terrorizing Aunt May when she's praying to when he reveals himself in No Way Home, Dafoe's performance as Goblin is one of the best in the entire franchise and is a perfect example of how Marvel tries to integrate horror into their films.

3 The Snap

Thanos in Avengers Infinity War
Marvel Studios

Avengers: Infinity War changed the trajectory of the MCU. The film is one of the best films in the franchise and has its own reflection of horror. Obviously, a lot happened in Infinity War to get MCU fans riled up and terrified of the future. However, nothing shot fear and despair straight down our spines like the snap. Wiping away the existence of half of the living things in the universe is terrifying in the simplest terms. Watching some of our favorite heroes get reduced to dust was a hard pill to swallow and left MCU fans in a state of anxiousness until Endgame came out.

2 "There are no strings on me."

James Spader as Ultron in Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

There is a lot of criticism shot at Avengers: Age of Ultron for being the worst Avengers movie (even if the movie itself isn't considered "bad"). However, Ultron is one of those villains that has many layers to him. He is oddly witty, sometimes funny, and completely unhinged. Therefore, when Ultron confronts the Avengers for the first time, he uses one of Tony's bots as a vessel to exist in the physical world. When that vessel is destroyed, he is essentially set free, and he sings, "I have strings, but now I'm free. There are no strings on me."

1 Doc Ock Massacre

SpiderMan2 (2)
Columbia Pictures

Death is a common occurrence in franchises like Marvel. We all recognize Spider-Man as one of MCU's most beloved heroes. Back during Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, certain horror elements were embraced in the superhero film. In Spider-Man 2, Doc Ock has his horror movie moment as a villain in this franchise. Yes, we are talking about the infamous hospital massacre. Doc Ock is waking up in the operating table when his extra arms take out every single doctor in the room. The camera work made this scene incredibly gruesome and resembled an intense found footage film.
