Sometimes, a film doesn't have to be particularly deep to be enjoyable. Take 2018's The Meg, for instance. For a movie to be enjoyable, sometimes it just has to get the bare essentials down to a fine point and take a simple idea to the biggest extreme it can go. In The Meg, it just so happens to be a movie about a gigantic shark. A prehistoric megalodon shark, to be exact. Bigger is always better, right?

Five years later, a sequel to The Meg entitled Meg 2: The Trench looks to up the ante in more ways than one. Not only will our gratuitously-gigantic shark make a comeback, but other creatures from the depths will also find themselves breaching the surface to take on humanity along with other land-dwelling creatures. If you ever wanted to see a megalodon eat a T-Rex, Meg 2 may be right up your alley. But if that's not enough reason to catch Meg 2, there are plenty of other reasons to be excited about this aquatic action flick.

More Megalodons

It's typical for a movie sequel to go bigger than what came before. What could be more intimidating than a single megalodon shark? How about three megalodon sharks for a start? But we've seen this kind of shtick before. Let's not forget how quickly Sharknado faded out of relevancy. Tripling our shark count means we'll need some new ideas to keep things interesting.

Taking over as director in lieu of Jon Turteltaub is Ben Wheatley, a director who you may be surprised to see attached. Known for his darkly-comedic approaches to the action and horror genre, it's a bit odd that they'd be given the opportunity to make a colorful giant shark movie.

However, this kind of creative shake-up may be necessary to keep The Meg as fresh as the daily catch. A change in director literally means a change in direction, and in the case of Meg 2, it looks like we'll be going beyond the depths of the ocean to breach the surface in more ways than one. While they may not be able to pull the same trick for a third film, we'll at least be able to revel in the on-screen mayhem that our giant megalodons can muster.

Bigger Fish to Fry

We won't just be seeing sharks take chunks out of almost everything this time. Based on the looks of things, there'll be a lot more than just fish to fry.

We mentioned that one of the sharks eats a dinosaur. Oh, a shark eating a velociraptor or spinosaurus, that's kind of cool. But you'd be mistaken — we're talking about a full-size tyrannosaurus rex here. The king of the dinosaurs was reduced to nothing more than chum in an instant.

While we may not see full-size dinosaurs in most of the film, we get a brief glimpse of newcomer Wu Jing fighting off what appears to be a land-based reptile in Meg 2's trailer. However, it's hard to say if it's a modern animal or something dredged up from prehistory. It'd line up with the film's official plot synopsis that our group of heroic researchers will be pitted against "relentless environmental plunderers."

The depths of the sea will come back with a vengeance, as well. A large tentacled creature can be seen attacking a helicopter before ultimately bringing it down, and should the events of Meg 2 line up with those in the book it's based on, we may also see a new threat in the form of a newly-discovered prehistoric monster tagging alongside our megalodons.

The Return of Statham

Jason Statham in Meg 2 The Trench

It's always a treat to see Jason Statham take a somewhat silly concept for an action movie and roll with it completely. Whether you loved him in the over-the-top Crank series or even just in the previous Meg film, you'll be happy to know he'll reprise his role for Meg 2: The Trench.

It's easy to tell when Statham is having fun with a movie. The Crank series arguably wouldn't work nearly as well without his high-energy, unabridged commitment to its ludicrous premise.

But whereas The Meg franchise doesn't rely on keeping one's self alive through constant adrenaline or electrical shocks, signing up to fight a megalodon feels similarly over the top. Don't believe us? A teased scene features Statham riding a jet-ski atop a tidal wave, clutching a harpoon in his bare hands as if he were the mighty Poseidon, ready to throw down against an encroaching megalodon. All he'd need to do is jump over the monstrous thing, and we'd cross into unadulterated zaniness.

We're about to enter summer blockbuster season, and there really couldn't be a more fitting way to ring in the months of non-stop crowd-pleasers with something like Meg 2: The Trench. The film is currently scheduled to release exclusively in theaters on Aug. 4.
