The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, will be creating and executive producing a new animated series for Netflix as part of the multi-year deal agreement between the streamer, Meghan, and Prince Harry to provide a number of series, documentaries, features, and programming for children. The series currently has the working title of Pearl and comes from Meghan and Harry's Archewell Productions. The series is being pitched as a family series that focuses on the adventures of a 12 year old who gains inspiration from a number of influential women from history.

"Like many girls her age, our heroine Pearl is on a journey of self-discovery as she tries to overcome life's daily challenges," said Markle, co-founder of Archewell Productions. "I'm thrilled that Archewell Productions, partnered with the powerhouse platform of Netflix and these incredible producers, will together bring you this new animated series, which celebrates extraordinary women throughout history. David Furnish and I have been eager to bring this special series to light, and I am delighted we are able to announce it today."

The series will be the first animation from the production company and is the second recent announcement from the partnership with Netflix, following the announcement in April that the streamer would be working with Archewell on a docuseries called Heart of Invictus, which is produced with the Invictus Game Foundation which follows the stories of resilience shown by competitors participating in the Games at The Hague 2020, which due to COVID-19 will now take place in 2022.

Megan Casey, Director of Original Animation at Netflix, said of the new partnership, "An exciting tale that weaves together fantasy and history, Pearl focuses on a young girl who learns to step into her own power when she embarks on a heroic adventure and meets important women from history along the way. We're excited to develop this animated series with our partners at Archewell Productions and Story Syndicate."

The release credits Meghan as The Duchess of Sussex for her executive producer role with David Furnish, Carolyn Soper, Liz Garbus, and Dan Cogan. Amanda Rynda is expected to be showrunner and executive producer.

David Furnish, who has had a long history with Prince Harry thanks to his husband Elton John being a long standing family friend, said of the production, "I am delighted that we are finally able to announce this exciting animated series. Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex and I are deeply passionate about bringing the inspirational and positive stories of extraordinary women from around the world to a global audience of all ages. The team collaborating on the series are first class, and Netflix are the perfect partner."

Carolyn Soper said, "Animation is the perfect medium to bring this fun, heartfelt and inspiring story to life. Pearl is a character in which everyone will recognize a piece of themselves while absolutely rooting for her as she discovers so much about the world, both past and present, and how she fits into it. I am thrilled to be working with Meghan and such an illustrious team."

While there is currently no date confirmed for the series to arrive on Netflix, it is expected to be late 2022 at the earliest. This story comes to us from Deadline.
