Mel Gibson has reportedly signed on to play the villain in The Expendables 3, according to an unconfirmed report.

As you may recall, franchise star Sylvester Stallone revealed in April that he wanted Mel Gibson to direct this action sequel, before landing Australian director Patrick Hughes (Red Hill) later that month. No details have been given regarding this villainous character yet.

Nicolas Cage, Jackie Chan, Wesley Snipes and Milla Jovovich are confirmed to star alongside Sylvester Stallone. Stallone also expressed interest last month in bringing on stars of The Raid: Redemption, although no specific names were mentioned.

Sylvester Stallone wrote the screenplay for The Expendables 3, with no story details revealed just yet. We reported last month that Lionsgate has set an August 15, 2014 release date, but it is not known when shooting will begin.

Mel Gibson last starred in Get the Gringo, and he will next be seen in Robert Rodriguez's sequel Machete Kills.
