Tessa Thompson was well aware of what she was taking on when she signed up for Men In Black: International. The first installment is a classic and she knew that audiences would more than likely be looking for her and co-star Chris Hemsworth to bring in some popular lines from the original movie. However, she was intent on not making the movie too nostalgic and shied away from things she deemed to be too easy.

In a recent interview to promote Men in Black: International, Tessa Thompson was asked about a famous line Will Smith's Agent J utters in the first movie. Specifically, he says, "I make this look good," and Thompson had no desire to bring that back. The line is something audiences are probably expecting, so she stayed away from it. She had this to say when asked about the line.

"I wouldn't have said it. In fact, I think someone did ask me to - just as an option - and I said no. (Laughs.) M is just different from that character (Agent J). Yeah, I was really conscious of too much nostalgia."

When looking further into making Men in Black: International, Tessa Thompson did say there were times when she wanted to "lean in" to the nostalgic aspects of the franchise. It all comes as balance because too much of it bogs the fans down and shows up on the critical radar. However, it is hard to bring in new actors for a well-known franchise and not have some nods to the familiar, much like J.J. Abrams taking on 2015's The Force Awakens. Some fans have accused him of making something to familiar and too safe. The opposite can be said for Rian Johnson, who stepped outside of the lines for The Last Jedi.

Tessa Thompson was also asked about when fans will see Valkyrie on the big screen again after Avengers: Endgame. The actress revealed that she doesn't know yet, but she is excited to find out and see what the future holds for her character, who some fans are hoping has a romantic relationship with Carol Danvers down the line. Whatever the case may be, it looks like Valkyrie will be coming back at some point, possibly in Thor 4, which is rumored to be in development or maybe even Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

Men in Black: International is now out in theaters and it should easily take the number one spot at the box office this weekend. With that being said, it doesn't look like it's going to be the hit that the studio was expecting it to be. Hopefully some word of mouth advertising amongst moviegoers will change the box office outcome in the next few weeks. While we wait, you can check out the lengthy interview with Tessa Thompson over at The Hollywood Reporter.
