Mia Wasikowska is set to topline the upcoming adaptation Madame Bovary for director Sophie Barthes and writer Rose Barreneche.

The script will stay true to Gustave Flaubert's original story, but it will put a fresh spin on this tale of a beautiful small-town doctor's wife, Emma Bovary, who attempts to climb the social ladder by engaging in extra-marital affairs. The project will emphasize the more youthful themes found in the book, which haven't been fully explored in past big screen incarnations of the material.

Paul Giamatti is also set to star as Monsieur Homais, a friend of the doctor who threatens to expose Emma's secrets. The film is coming from Occupant Entertainment, with production set to start in the fall.
