Michael Gandolfini may have been given the big shoes of his father to fill in The Many Saints of Newark, in which he played a younger version of Tony Soprano, and is set to appear in the Paramount+ mini series The Offer, but he doesn’t have any worries about being typecast in mafia roles and is just essentially happy to be doing the job he is. As the son of such a great actor as James Gandolfini, you would be forgiven for thinking that there would be a lot of pressure on the 22 year old actor, but it seems that he's content simply being able to follow in his father’s footsteps.

In a new interview with TooFab, the younger Gandolfini discussed his career in detail, beginning with his small role in The Offer, which he features in one episode of. "It's a very small part, but it was very fun. I did it a couple months ago. Everyone on it was incredible," Gandolfini said, before countering the suggestion that he could be about to be typecast in mob related roles, saying, “I don't know man. I just love my job. So whenever I get to do it, I'm happy to do it."

Michael Gandolfini previously appeared in Oceans 8 and Cherry, and had something to say about the obvious comparisons made to his late father’s legacy. "I mean I think that casting directors are really talented at what they do and whatever I fit in. I'm obviously physically and emotionally very different than my dad so wherever I fit man. I'm happy to be a part of anything."

Previously, Gandolfini discussed the tough decision he had taking on the role of Tony Soprano in The Many Saints of Newark with Empire Magazine. The actor noted that the unexpected and completely unique situation was “probably the toughest decision I’ve ever had to make. You know, I didn’t want to put pressure on myself to walk out of this feeling like I’d grown in terms of my feelings towards my dad. I just wanted to be the best actor I could be, portraying Tony in the way David wanted, scene by scene. I didn’t think about my grief because… well, I would have sh*t the bed.”

He went on, “My dad’s character had all this beautiful sensitivity underneath this aggression. This version of him is the reverse. His curiosity and sensitivity comes first. He’s not a gun-wielding gangster. He’s a kid who gets whittled down and pulled in.”

The Many Saints of Newark has sparked a resurgence of interest in The Sopranos, with the original series on HBO Max picking up more viewers since the arrival of the prequel movie, and that has led to talks with creator David Chase about further series or movies to bridge the gap between the two entities, which could branch out to follow other characters or could continue to track Tony Soprano. Either way, The Sopranos is one of those shows that is not just about to fade into history, and with a legacy like that, there is always the expectation of more stories to be told with characters.
