The Weinstein Company's upcoming adaptation of the 1982 Broadway musical Nine is being written by Oscar nominated screenplay writer Michael Tolkin. According to Variety, the play itself was based on Fellini's 8 1/2.
The movie revolves around the life of famous film director Guido Contini. When he suddenly has a creative crisis, he is forced to contend with the numerous women he has in his life.
Rob Marshall, who is producing the film, is committed to keeping the film rooted in the postwar cinema of Italy. That was the key reason Tolkin signed on. He stated, "On 500 channels of cable and satellite, the classic Italian cinema is lost for the young people of today. It was the era of skinny ties and the original cool sunglasses."
Harvey Weinstein has called Tolkin the perfect man to bring Nine to the screen. Harvey stated, "Michael's unique understanding of show business and the creative process will help create a clever and sexy film."
The film is still in the stages of being cast. The creative team behind Nine isn't sure if the movie will be ready for 2008, or if it will have to wait until 2009 to be released. Right now, its all a matter of getting the right performers for the project.
