True Detective star Michelle Monaghan has signed on to play the female lead in Sony Pictures' Pixels, joining a cast that already includes Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Josh Gad and Peter Dinklage, who just finalized his deal.

The adventure is based on Patrick Jean's 2010 short film (CLICK HERE to watch the full short), which showcased New York City being transformed into 8-bit pixels. This big-screen adventure centers on aliens who misinterpret video feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war against their species. They start to attack the U.S. by staging versions of these games on a massive scale.

Kevin James is playing the U.S. President, who turns to his childhood best friend to lead a team of gamers to thwart this attack. Adam Sandler is playing a former video game champion who now makes his living as a home theater installer. Josh Gad is portraying a genius obsessed with conspiracy theories, while Peter Dinklage will play Adam Sandler's brash rival. Michelle Monaghan is portraying a weapons developer and love interest of Adam Sandler's character.

Chris Columbus is directing from a script by Tim Herlihy and Timothy Dowling. The director is currently working with Sony and several companies who created classic 1980s arcade video games to bring their characters to life on the big screen. Here's what Sony's Doug Belgrad had to say in a statement.

"Pixels is the perfect showcase for Adam Sandler's brand of all-audience comedy. Adam and Chris have created a story that will deliver truly unique action, comedy and special effects and bringing back beloved arcade-game characters in a delightfully original manner."

Production is scheduled to begin in Toronto this June, with Sony eyeing a summer 2015 release date. Michelle Monaghan will next be seen in The Best of Me alongside James Marsden, opening in theaters this October.
