Actor Jonathan Groff has teased the possibility of a third season of the fan-favorite Netflix series, Mindhunter. Appearing recently on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Groff was asked what was more likely, Frozen 3 or Mindhunter Season 3? The actor believes that both are equally likely to happen in the near future.

“I feel like, even though those projects seem very different, Frozen and Mindhunter, I feel like a third Frozen and a third season of Mindhunter are equally possible.”

So, while a third season of Mindhunter was seemingly dead in the water, this should provide at least some hope that Groff’s Holden Ford and Holt McCallany’s Bill Tench will return to interview more serial killers in the name of entertainment.

Created by Joe Penhall and based on the 1995 true-crime book "Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit" written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker, the first season of Mindhunter was released on Netflix back in 2017. Guided and partly helmed by celebrated filmmaker David Fincher, the series details the early days of criminal psychology and criminal profiling at the FBI, revolving around FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) as they begin to interview several high-profile serial killers in order to understand their psychology and hopefully stop similar crimes from happening in the future.

Alongside psychologist Wendy Carr (Anna Torv), they interview the likes of Edmund Kemper, Jerry Brudos, Richard Speck, David Berkowitz AKA Son of Sam, Elmer Wayne Henley, and Charles Manson.

Both seasons of Mindhunter have been met with critical acclaim, but despite such a positive response, the series’ future has been in question ever since the release of season 2 in 2019. Netflix has since stated that Mindhunter Season 3 is on indefinite hold due to David Fincher wanting to pursue other projects. It is also thought that other factors such as budget and further talent availability have also kept Mindhunter Season 3 from happening.

The Possibility of Mindhunter Season 3 Has Been Extremely Up and Down

Now that Jonathan Groff has stated that a return for Mindhunter is just as likely as a return for Elsa and friends (which, being Disney, is pretty likely) we can add these words to the ongoing ebbs and flows that have teased and disappointed Mindhunter fans in equal measure.

Back in October 2020, David Fincher seemed to put the nail in the coffin for Mindhunter, revealing that the show was too expensive for Netflix to continue. "Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show,” the Se7en director explained. “We talked about, 'Finish Mank and then see how you feel,' but I honestly don't think we're going to be able to do it for less than I did Season 2. And on some level, you have to be realistic about dollars have to equal eyeballs."

Thankfully, things have gotten somewhat more positive for Mindhunter since, with Fincher stating that, should fans make enough noise, Netflix may be tempted to bring the show back for more. "Audiences around the world need [to] let Netflix know that there is a real interest & demand for Season 3 of Mindhunter if you make enough noise, It might actually happen...." the director tweeted in October 2021.

Now that Fincher has signed a four-year development deal with Netflix, and with Jonathan Groff clearly on board, could Mindhunter Season 3 finally happen? The first two seasons of Mindhunter are available on Netflix.
