Legally Blonde 3 is in the works, and scriptwriter Mindy Kaling is open to making it a family affair.

The original Legally Blonde quickly became a classic feminist film, following sorority-president-turned-law-student Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) as she navigates the rigors of Harvard Law—while never sacrificing her positive attitude and perfect pink wardrobe.

When asked whether she was open to the possibility of including original star Witherspoon's daughter, Ava Phillippe, in the upcoming sequel, Kaling said it would be a "joy" to have her join the cast.

Phillippe is the eldest daughter of Witherspoon and fellow actor Ryan Phillippe. Though the 22-year-old seems to have mostly stayed out of the spotlight, with no current acting credits, Phillippe garnered attention online for being a spitting image of her famous mom.

"Listen, I think I can do anything," Kaling told Extra of the film. The Office and The Mindy Project writer was discussing working with Phillippe's brother, Deacon, on Netflix's Never Have I Ever when the question arose. "And if that's something [Ava] wanted to do, what a joy to have her in that."

Reese Witherspoon is Ready to Reprise Role of Elle Woods

Whether Phillippe decides to join the cast or not, mom Reese Witherspoon is excited to return to the iconic role.

"I think we're ready to see Elle and see what she's up to lately," Witherspoon said in 2015, noting that a lot of writers have come up with different ideas for a third movie over the years. "I actually think it's kind of great right now because we're talking about women in politics and how important that is to get more women. And I think it'd be kind of a cool thing to have her be a Supreme Court justice or somebody who runs for office, president."

With 2003's Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde seeing Elle travel to Washington D.C. to fight animal testing, it would only make sense to see her become Madam President.

There's no word yet on a release date for Legally Blonde 3, but Kaling is already excited to see how fans of Legally Blonde react to the upcoming third movie. "I just, I love the franchise so much," she said told People last year. "I can't wait to see what people will think of the way we wrote Elle Woods. We wrote Elle Woods at 40, so how Elle is at 40 versus how she was at 21 has been really fun to imagine."
