They encounter Fiona Fraunfeld, who is exactly 51 seconds late in collecting her vegetables for dinner. The young girl is instructed to collect one carrot, which she is able to do with her special abilities. Alma continues to explain how the Peculiars have been persecuted throughout the ages. And that's how they came to all live in a place like her lavish home.

Miss Peregrine reveals that she, herself is a Peculiar. She is what is known as an Ymbryne, and she has the ability to turn into a bird. Though that is not a very useful skill. More importantly, she can manipulate time. She chooses a safe place, a safe day, and creates a loop. She can reset the past 24 hours, and the day is yours to live again. You can reset this date daily, and stay there forever. This makes one entirely safe from the outside world.

It is further revealed that every Ymbryne commits themselves to the upkeep of a place like Miss Peregrine's home.
