Fans of the series about the Victorian era lady detective and her Scotland Yard inspector (beau)friend, William “the Duke” Wellington immediately took to Twitter after receiving some exciting news on Thursday. Not only has Miss Scarlet and the Duke gotten a greenlight for a season 3, but this third installment airs in the U.S. come January 2023 following the premiere of season 2 in October.

The delay in green-lighting a second season (and Masterpiece stepping in to become a lead producer on the project) meant Season 2 was not ready for the winter slot this past year. Though it’s been nearly two years since Miss Scarlet last aired, the show actually benefited from such a move. Eager fans will not have to wait long after one season ends, and another begins since filming has already been taken care of. Plus, Miss Scarlet and the Duke will be part of an all-female mystery lineup this fall with Annika and Magpie Murders.

Masterpiece’s mysteries and/or detective drama lineup has been pretty impressive going back to the 1970s and into the 1980s with the creation of Mystery! Miss Scarlet finished its run in the U.K. on Alibi on July 19, 2022.

For American fans, little is known about the upcoming season 2. While some faces won’t return, new ones will be introduced. Tim Chipping (The English Game) stars as Eliza Scarlet's new rival private detective Patrick Nash. Evan McCabe (Doctor Who) appears this season as Wellington's extremely green behind-the-ears detective and son of the new Police Commissioner, Oliver Fitzroy. Ian Pirie (The Capture) plays Wellington's new superior, Sergeant Munro. Michael Simkins (This is Going To Hurt) has a recurring role as Scotland Yard's new Police Commissioner Fitzroy. Laura Rollins (Innocent) as new ally Clementine and Jessie Cave (Harry Potter) as Hattie Parker round out Season 2’s cast. Viewers will have to wait and see if they or if even others from season 1 will return for season 3.

Miss Scarlet and the Duke season 2 will premiere on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2022, at 8:00 p.m. ET, airing on a weekly release schedule on most PBS stations, with all episodes streaming on PBS Passport the same day.
