Dav Pilkey's popular children's book series Captain Underpants is coming to the big screen under the direction of Monsters Vs. Aliens' Rob Letterman with a screenplay from The Muppets director Nick Stoller.

Captain Underpants is an animated family adventure that follows two fourth grade best friends who draw comics that they sell on the playground. Captain Underpants, their most popular creation, comes to life when the duo accidentally hypnotizes the school's overbearing principal, turning him into an actual superhero.

Captain Underpants was first launched by Scholastic Press in 1997, with more than 50 million books now in print in the U.S. alone. There have been 8 books in total, which have been successful in 19 different countries across the world. Several have debuted at #1 on various bestseller lists including The New York Times and USA Today.

The film is coming from DreamWorks Animation. No release date has been set.
