Despite a few references here and there, Moon Knight as a whole was the first MCU series on Disney+ not to contain any cameos or broader connections to the wider universe. Smaller Easter eggs like a Global Repatriation Council bus ad or a Madripoor namedrop by Layla were the only pieces of connective tissue that Moon Knight really had. However, director Mohamed Diab recently told Variety that there were plans at one point to tie the series more overtly to the MCU:

"I want to tell you the very first scene, there was a crossover, and the very end scene, there was a crossover. But as the story developed and we kept changing the scripts, we felt like, 'We don't need that.' All of us. It was a collective decision. And then I kept thinking: It's a rule. There has to be a scene at the end that connects us to the MCU. But I think they decided, 'You know what, the surprise is that there isn't, and what's going to make this show unique is it doesn't need anything else.'"

When looking at the Disney+ series so far, WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, and Hawkeye all had built-in MCU connections due to their leads. Moon Knight is the first Marvel show that focuses on a character making its debut and features supporting players like Layla and Arthur Harrow that have never been seen on-screen. The creatives behind Moon Knight were given the opportunity to build out a brand new corner of the MCU without having to feel constrained by other events that came before. The "blip" itself isn't even mentioned throughout the series, so Moon Knight was completely free to tell whatever story it wanted.

Moon Knight Could Tie Into The Wider MCU in a Few Different Ways

As far as how Moon Knight may end up folding into the MCU in the future, there are a few different possibilities. Since Madripoor was referenced during the series, that may mean Marvel would like to bring Marc Spector into the orbit of a character like Sharon Carter. In addition, the goddess Taweret mentions that the Duat exists in the same realm as the Ancestral Plane, which was introduced in Black Panther. Maybe some spiritual crossovers between Egyptian and Wakandan mythology is on the horizon.

Moon Knight may also become more connected to the overall MCU story in just a few months. Several Egyptian gods were introduced throughout the series, and the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder will feature Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher. While Gorr's main focus will more than likely be Thor by the end of the film, taking out members of the Ennead could set the stakes for how dangerous the God Butcher truly is.

The most exciting part about where Marc, Steven, and Jake Lockley show up next is that it could be anywhere. The post-credits scene of the Moon Knight finale clearly sets up a continuation of all of those characters, but there's no word as of yet on if a second season is on the way. Oscar Isaac only signed on for the initial six-episode run. However, since an actor of his caliber is still on the board for Kevin Feige, it's only a matter of time before Khonshu's fist of vengeance returns to the MCU.
