A relentless internet campaign calling for Morbius to return to theaters has turned out to be a success, even if most of those taking part seemed to have been doing so in jest. Morbius did not exactly have the warmest reception when it was originally released back in April. It has a dismal 17% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the most panned comic book movies of recent years. The film did make money at the box office, but it could not compete with the Venom films that also make up Sony's Marvel Universe. With fans joking about Morbius coming back to theaters, star Jared Leto took some time to get in on the fun. The actor posted a video on social media of himself reading a screenplay, and when he's asked what he's reading, Leto attempts to refuse answering the question. The video then manages to capture a peek at the cover page, pausing so fans can see the title of the script, which is Morbius 2: It's Morbin' Time by screenwriter Bartholomew Cubbins.

While Morbius 2: It's Morbin' Time is just a joke, the video did manage to pull in more than 10.5 million views in one day's time. Even if critics by and large had trashed the film, Morbius has been getting a lot of attention online regardless, and the fact that this social media discussion even led to the film's theatrical return shows that fans getting vocal about what they want, even if many are just kidding, really can lead to results.

Fans did make the return of Morbius to theaters happen, but not everyone was willing to actually make the trek out to theaters to catch the film. The return of Morbius has pretty much flopped immediately upon its comeback, making $85,000 on Friday after getting put back into 1,000 theaters. It was an experiment that just apparently did not work out.

But even with the criticism that the movie has been leveled with, there are others who found it to be rather enjoyable and undeserving of its negative reviews. This includes Al Madrigal, one of the stars of the film, who feels that the final product is much better than it has been getting credit for. Though, he still admits that there were some problems that he attributes to studio meddling and heavy editing.

“First of all, Morbius: not as bad as everybody is making it out to be," Madrigal told ComicBookMovie. "Sure, it had problems and they diced it up quite a bit. I had some hilarious lines that were cut out of that movie. I was very funny...I got butchered in that thing. I think that’s what they did. They just really…because of COVID, they just had so much time to mess with it. They really messed with it.”

If you want to catch Morbius, you can find the film playing in movie theaters.
