Alert! SPOILERS for Spider-Man: No Way Home to follow.

Much to the disappointment of many, the upcoming Sony/Marvel outing, Morbius, recently suffered another delay. Merely the latest in a litany of pushbacks, could there be a hugely crowd-pleasing reason for the release date change? Well, while the reason for the delay is likely to be due to the worsening of current global circumstances, some fans have theorized that instead, the time is being used to add a Marvel character who recently swung back into our lives: Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man.

Of course, for those who have seen Spider-Man: No Way Home (and if you haven’t, what exactly have you been doing with yourself?), Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker AKA Spider-Man, who led Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, has been revealed to exist within the Marvel multiverse. Making his surprisingly triumphant debut alongside both Tom Holland and a returning Tobey Maguire, Garfield’s stellar performance in No Way Home has many fans hoping that he will be brought back for more, and Morbius could be the perfect moment to do it.

Morbius’ place in the Sony Venom-Verse and Marvel Cinematic Universe is somewhat confusing at present, with clues hinting at links between The Living Vampire and the likes of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man franchise, the MCU, and The Amazing Spider-Man, as well as Tom Hardy’s Venom. This has, in fact, led some to believe that Morbius’ first big-screen outing could see him venturing into the multiverse, and while this is somewhat unlikely, it is possible that it will be used as a backdoor to bring these universes together once-and-for-all.

Now that Spider-Man: No Way Home has reintroduced Andrew Garfield’s iteration of the Marvel hero into the multiversal fray, there is no doubt that an appearance from the actor, no matter how small, would have audiences cheering. Both Marvel and Sony seem wholly dedicated to committing to the potential of a cinematic multiverse, with the latter studio foolish not to consider spawning a separate Spider-Man franchise alongside Holland’s tenure and their Venom series.

Morbius star Jared Leto has recently teased the connectivity of the movie. “In the film version of Morbius that we’re bringing to you now, he’s also a part of a much larger universe,” the actor explained. “If you’ve seen the last Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, you know the Multiverse has officially opened, and there’s all kinds of opportunities for villains to meet up, thrive, and maybe even nurture their more sinister intents. That’s all I’m gonna say for right now.”

Morbius will introduce one of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters as Academy Award winner Jared Leto is transformed into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his exact fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease, transforming the good doctor into a conflicted monster.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa, Morbius stars the likes of Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson alongside Jared Leto and is now due for release on April 1, 2022, from Sony Pictures.
