Another early reaction to the Sony comic book flick Morbius has emerged, and it is ... not great. In a tweet that now appears to have been deleted, That Hashtag Show’s Nick Santos reveals that he has not only seen Morbius, but that it is a “messy” movie that does not know “what universe it’s in or what characters it coexists with.” Oh, dear.

“I’ve seen a nearly final cut of Morbius. It’s a messy film, doesn’t know what universe it’s in or what characters it coexists with,” Santos initially shared via Twitter. “It definitely isn’t the well-oiled machine that the MCU is. Some people will like it, but for most people, it’s going to be hard to get behind.”

While the reaction states that he saw a “nearly” final cut of the movie, it sounds like any last-minute changes would do extremely well to turn this comic book chaos into something more critically appealing. This review also further indicates that Morbius will suffer from an identity crisis, with the movie allegedly not knowing which universe it resides within, which characters the Sony antihero should be integrating with, and where it sits in the Marvel movie multiverse.

Much of the marketing for Morbius has hinted at the movie being linked to various different franchises, including the likes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Amazing Spider-Man, and Venom. Still, this reaction, along with the recent reports that most of the movie’s easter eggs and cameos have been cut, suggests that there really was no plan for the multiversal madness. Instead, it sounds like Morbius has been left a confusing mess.

Early Reactions to Morbius Have Been Less Than Lukewarm So Far

While we wait for the floodgates to open and the embargo on Morbius to lift (which will reportedly not happen until the last minute), the early reactions so have been pretty much what many had expected. “Heard from several journalists who've seen the film already (junket purposes) that it's boring and uncalculated,” this reaction to Morbius reveals. “No consistency, except that it's bad. Good moment here and there, and 2-3 easter eggs, but otherwise, just watch it when it gets home.” So, not the most ringing endorsement.

Morbius will introduce one of Marvel's most compelling and conflicted characters as Academy Award winner Jared Leto is transformed into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease, transforming the good doctor into a conflicted monster.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa and written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, Morbius stars Jared Leto as Michael Morbius alongside Matt Smith as Morbius’ childhood friend Milo; Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft, Morbius’ fiancee; Jared Harris as Nicholas, Morbius’ mentor; and Al Madrigal and Tyrese Gibson as a pair of FBI agents on the hunt for the vampire menace. Morbius is scheduled to be released in the United States on April 1, 2022, following a series of delays.
