Early reactions to Sony’s upcoming comic book movie outing, Morbius, are likely to be exactly what many would expect. While the individual reactions themselves have yet to emerge, a tweet about the early reactions has revealed that those lucky (or perhaps that should be unlucky) enough to have seen Morbius have called the Spider-Man spinoff movie “boring” and “uncalculated.”

Coming courtesy of GWW editor Brandon Matthews who took to social media to share what he's been hearing regarding Morbius, this certainly does not sound like the kind of thing that Marvel fans wanted to hear. Though, in terms of critical reaction to Sony’s Marvel output, it would have been far more surprising had the early reactions to Morbius been made up of glowing praise.

The reaction to the reactions goes on to claim that the movie has “no consistency, except that it's bad,” before adding that there is a “good moment here and there,” concluding that audiences would be best served waiting to “watch it when it gets home.”

Perhaps the most surprising revelation however is the claim that Morbius only contains “2-3 easter eggs.” Since the marketing for Morbius began, many had speculated that this would be the movie to take the Sony Spider-Man Shared Universe into the multiverse, with many even theorizing that Morbius would embark on an adventure across multiple universes. But it sounds like this is far from the case, with a couple of Easter eggs nowhere near enough to provide the multiversal madness that some are expecting.

Footage from Morbius so far has teased links with a multitude of franchises, including Venom, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and The Amazing Spider-Man, and while fans are understandably expecting more in the finished film, it sounds like we may have already seen all the Easter eggs that Morbius has to offer.

Of course, critical reactions aren’t everything, with Morbius’ antihero predecessor Venom receiving a less-than-warm reception upon release. Despite this, Venom went on to achieve a hugely impressive $856 million at the worldwide box office and recently received a sequel. No doubt Sony is hoping for similar success with Morbius, regardless of what the early reactions may suggest about the movie’s overall quality.

Morbius will introduce one of Marvel's most compelling and conflicted characters as Academy Award winner Jared Leto is transformed into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success soon reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease, transforming the good doctor into a conflicted monster.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa and written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, Morbius stars Jared Leto as Michael Morbius alongside Matt Smith as Morbius’ childhood friend Milo; Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft, Morbius’ fiancee; Jared Harris as Nicholas, Morbius’ mentor; and Al Madrigal and Tyrese Gibson as a pair of FBI agents on the hunt for the vampire menace. Morbius is scheduled to be released in the United States on April 1, 2022, following a series of delays.
