A new poster for Sony’s upcoming Venom-Verse outing, Morbius, teases the duality of Jared Leto’s title character, who undergoes a vampiric transformation after an experiment gone wrong. Putting the two-sides of Jared Leto’s Morbius center stage, and looking a lot like the poster for the first Venom, the tagline even drops in the word “Marvel” for good measure, as Morbius continues Sony’s expansion into the multiverse.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa and written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, Morbius stars Jared Leto as Michael Morbius, alongside Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson. The movie finds Leto as Michael Morbius, a scientist suffering from a rare blood disease who decides to experiment on himself. In an attempt to cure himself, Michael becomes afflicted with a form of vampirism, gaining superhuman abilities but none of the superstitious weaknesses associated with the legendary creatures.

Much of the marketing material has focused on Mobius’ transformation, which takes Jared Leto’s leading-man good looks and twists them into a monstrous form that adheres very closely to the pages of Marvel Comics. An actor who has become well-known for disguising himself in the name of cinema, Jared Leto has teased what drew him to the part of Morbius, describing the project as "a Jekyll and Hyde story that's just big and fun, and sometimes is a little scary, which is, I think, different for that genre. And I'm excited about it. That should be a big, fun popcorn movie."

Much like Venom: Let There Be Carnage before it, Morbius will continue to open up the Sony multiverse, with the recent trailer having mentioned Tom Hardy’s symbiotic antihero by name. The movie will also include Michael Keaton as Spider-Man: Homecoming villain Adrian Toomes AKA The Vulture, which could, according to Leto, lead to the big-screen debut of The Sinister Six. “In the film version of Morbius that we’re bringing to you now, he’s also a part of a much larger universe,” Leto said at Brazil CCXP 2021. “If you’ve seen the last Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, you know the Multiverse has officially opened, and there’s all kinds of opportunities for villains to meet up, thrive, and maybe even nurture their more sinister intents. That’s all I’m gonna say for right now.”

Sony’s Venom-Verse and its relationship with the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still a little confusing, but with Marvel sequel Spider-Man: No Way Home due to reintroduce several villains from other franchises, as well as the post-credits scene at the end of Venom: Let There Be Carnage seemingly throwing Eddie Brock into the MCU, it likely won’t be too long before Venom, Morbius, Kraven the Hunter and more are brought face-to-face with Tom Holland’s web-slinger, as Sony finally crafts The Sinister Six spinoff that they have desired for so long.

Based on the Marvel Comics character Morbius, the Living Vampire, and produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel, Morbius is scheduled to be released in the United States on January 28, 2022, having been delayed from its initial July 2020 date due to the ongoing global situation.
