A new collection of set images from the filming of the upcoming Barbie movie gives us another look at Margot Robbie as the iconic doll and Ryan Gosling as cowboy Ken. Released courtesy of Twitter user and mega Margot Robbie fan Best of Margot, the images have both Barbie and Ken fitted out in Western-style outfits, with the pair looking about as close to the Mattel toys come to life as you’re ever going to get.

The Mattel toy line has given Barbie and Ken plenty of cowboy costumes over the years, and it looks like the movie will be taking a lot of inspiration from this source. No doubt both Barbie and Ken will go through several costume changes throughout the course of the Barbie movie, and hopefully, we might see something similar to the superb montage from Toy Story 3, with Ryan Gosling trying out a whole host of different, increasingly garish ensembles.

Further images from the set of Barbie show Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig working together and clearly having a great time bringing the iconic doll to live-action life.

Plot details for the Barbie movie currently remain under wraps, but it has been suggested that the movie will find Margot Robbie as a version of Barbie who no longer feels like she fits in. Whatever the plot, we can safely assume that things are going to get meta, with Robbie teasing that the project will be different from what audiences might be expecting.

"We like the things that feel a little left of center," the actress said. "Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, 'Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,' but our goal is to be like, 'Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted.'”

"Now, can we truly honor the IP and the fan base and also surprise people?” she continued. “Because if we can do all that and provoke a thoughtful conversation, then we’re really firing on all cylinders."

Based on the eponymous toy line by Mattel and directed by Greta Gerwig from a screenplay written by herself and Noah Baumbach, the Barbie movie will introduce several different versions of Barbie and Ken. Which heavily suggests that the story will begin in some sort of “Barbie” world where everyone is either a Barbie or a Ken. Starring alongside Margot Robbie as the main Barbie, the movie will also feature Issa Rae as another Barbie and Hari Nef as a Barbie, with Sex Education star Emma Mackey expected to play another Barbie due to her striking likeness to Robbie.

Ryan Gosling will star as Ken, with Ncuti Gatwa and Simu Liu on board as alternate versions of Ken. The rest of the Barbie supporting cast includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Ariana Greenblatt, Alexandra Shipp, Michael Cera, and Will Ferrell as the CEO of a toy company.

Barbie is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 21, 2023.
