Earlier today we reported that John Krasinski was the leading contender to play The First Avenger: Captain America and now a new story indicates that might not be the case. Deadline New York is now reporting that Krasinski isn't even in the running for the role and that actors Garrett Hedlund and Mike Vogel have the best chances.

The site also reports that Marvel has expanded their search and Chris Evans is also on the studio's list now. Hedlund was an actor that was previously mentioned on the studio's short list, but it was said at the time that a testing deal wasn't worked out because of scheduling issues.

It was said that the other actors mentioned - Chace Crawford, John Krasinski, Scott Porter, and Michael Cassidy - were essentially out of the running for the role, which in part contradicts our earlier story about Krasinski being the lead candidate for the role.

We'll be sure to keep you posted on this ever-changing casting climate for The First Avenger: Captain America as soon as we have more information. Joe Johnston will direct the film based off a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The film is currently set for a July 22, 2011 release date.
