On Friday, /akira-wants-zac-efron/news leaked that Zac Efron is wanted for the lead role of Shotaro Kaneda in the upcoming live-action adaptation of Akira, which is being directed by Allen and Albert Hughes. While trying to confirm this story, Bloody Disgusting discovered that Morgan Freeman is also circling the project.

Freeman is reportedly up for The Colonel role in this story about a teenage gang member who is subjected to government experiments that unleash his latent powers. The original Manga, which was turned into a hugely popular Anime in 1988, takes place in a futuristic Japan after a nuclear war has ravaged the country. Seeing as how neither Zac Efron nor Morgan Freeman are Japanese, it is suspected that the location will change for this live-action retelling.

Official casting announcements are expected soon. Akira is expected to start shooting in early 2011.
